Gaumukh Tapovan is a spectacular high-altitude trek in Uttarakhand, known for the Gaumukh Glacier, the source region of the Bhagirathi River, dramatic glacial terrain and the alpine meadows of Tapovan beneath some of the most impressive peaks of the Garhwal Himalayas.
Gaumukh and Tapovan are located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, within the Gangotri region. The trek begins from Gangotri and follows the Bhagirathi Valley towards Gaumukh and Tapovan.
Gaumukh Tapovan is generally rated Moderate to Difficult. The trek involves significant altitude gain, long walking days, rocky and glacial terrain and a demanding ascent towards Tapovan. Good physical fitness and previous high-altitude trekking experience are recommended.
Tapovan is situated at approximately 14,600 ft above sea level.
The total trekking distance is generally around 40–50 km, depending on the exact itinerary, campsites and route followed.
The Himalayasgriffon Gaumukh Tapovan itinerary is planned as a multi-day high-altitude trek, including transportation according to the selected package. The exact duration depends on the itinerary, acclimatisation schedule and travel arrangements.
The trek begins from Gangotri, one of Uttarakhand's major Himalayan pilgrimage destinations. From Gangotri, the route progresses through the upper Bhagirathi Valley towards Bhojbasa, Gaumukh and Tapovan.
It is generally better suited to trekkers with previous trekking experience. Physically fit beginners may consider the trek with adequate preparation and professional guidance, but the altitude, glacial terrain and demanding ascent to Tapovan should not be underestimated.
The preferred trekking periods are generally May to June and September to October, depending on snow, weather, trail conditions and official access regulations. The monsoon period is generally less suitable for this route.
Yes. Snow can be encountered around the higher sections of the trail, particularly during the early part of the trekking season or following fresh snowfall. Conditions vary according to the season and weather.
Gaumukh is the snout of the Gangotri Glacier and is traditionally regarded as the source region of the Bhagirathi River, one of the principal headstreams of the Ganga. It is an important natural and spiritual destination in the Garhwal Himalayas.
Tapovan is a spectacular high-altitude meadow above the Gaumukh Glacier, surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountain scenery in the Garhwal Himalayas. It is particularly known for its close views of Mt. Shivling and the surrounding peaks.
Accommodation generally includes guest house/hotel stays and camping, depending on the itinerary and operational conditions. Trekking sections primarily involve camping.
Yes. Meals are provided according to the Himalayasgriffon package and are generally vegetarian, with the exact meal plan shared before departure.
Transportation depends on the selected Himalayasgriffon package. Pickup and drop-off details will be clearly mentioned in the booking itinerary.
Essential items include:
Additional equipment may be required depending on snow, glacier and trail conditions.
Yes. Proper trekking shoes with strong grip and ankle support are essential because the route includes rocky, uneven, steep and potentially snowy or slippery terrain.
Yes. Selected trekking equipment can be arranged on a rental basis, subject to availability. Pre-booking is recommended.
Yes, when undertaken with proper preparation, acclimatisation and professional trek support. However, the route includes high-altitude and glacial terrain, and weather conditions can change quickly. Trekkers should always follow the trek leader's instructions.
Yes. Entry to the Gangotri–Gaumukh region is regulated, and trekkers require the applicable permits and permissions. Permit procedures, entry limits and regulations can change, so current requirements should be confirmed before departure.
Travel insurance is strongly recommended. Make sure the policy covers high-altitude trekking and emergency medical/evacuation requirements.
Suitability depends on age, fitness, medical condition, acclimatisation ability and previous trekking experience. Because the route reaches significant altitude and includes demanding terrain, individual fitness should be carefully assessed before booking.
If heavy snowfall, rain, poor visibility, unstable terrain, unsafe glacier conditions or other factors make the route unsafe, the trek leader may modify the itinerary, change the route, delay movement or stop the group from proceeding.
The itinerary is planned to reach Tapovan, but actual access is subject to weather, snow, glacier and trail conditions, permits and safety considerations. Safety always takes priority over completing the planned route.
With Himalayasgriffon, the focus is on a safe, well-organised and authentic high-altitude Himalayan experience, supported by local knowledge, trained trek staff and carefully planned logistics.

It was an amazing trekking experience! The arrangements were perfect, guides were super helpful, and the overall vibe was just awesome. We enjoyed every moment and created unforgettable memories. Highly recommended for every adventure lover!

Points that really worked for me. All home stay we stayed, Wherher it was at Sankari or Osla were very comfortable and great hospitality. Timely food and family like atmosphere in mountains and when you are seating in the tent when it rains outside, the conversations and stories from our Trek leader Suraj were interesting and entertaining. Suraj Rana definitely should be your trek guide. But be prepared for the mountains. As they say Mumbai ka fashion aur pahado ka Mausam kabhi bhi badal sakta hai Thanks Suraj Rana
